French designer Jean Paul Gaultier showed off his latest collection by opening his fashion show with a plus size model strutting her stuff down the runway. Jean Paul Gaultier is unconventional in his approach to fashion and has often been criticized for his models who are older men and women who are not always tooth pick thin. The difference is this was a serious event with a serious full size model. This was no a gimmick. The result is there there is a search for American's next top plus size models. With a larger-than-life model, modeling agencies are actively looking for "thick and sexy" curvy models. Jean Paul Gaultier and John Galiano had plus sized models in their shows in Paris. Tyra Banks, famous model and now talk show host of "American's Next Top Model", set up a contest and asked plus-size models to strut their stuff. Tyra stated, "You do not have to be super stick skinny in order to model." In order to compete for the coveted Thick & Sexy Top Plus Size Model top spot, the requirements were that the contestants must be over the age of 18. Those contestants each weighed in at over 200 pounds. Plus size model Mia Tyler, Joshua Morrow .of The Young and the Restless in the role of Nicholas Newman and the plus sized American Idol winner Ruben Studdard were the judges for the Model Search Contest. The models had a chance to show off on the Tyra Banks show. Thousands of hopefuls were eliminated but the opportunity to show off their bodies prompted thousands to apply. The first official Top Plus-Size Model Search ended when Marguerite Brown, weighing in at 218 pounds was crowned the first Top Plus Size Model in America. Plus-size modeling is growing in popularity as the advertising world has finally awakened to find this huge market of women who are starving for fashionable clothes made in their size. A women is considered plus size who wears a size 14 dress in North America. The cut off sizes for plus size models is different in other countries. The irony is that full size, plus size women make up most of the American population. So who were the designers designing for? Modeling agencies are in search of full size models to fill spots on TV , catalogue, print and runway jobs for advertisers who finally see the light and want to extend size-acceptance into the film, TV and music industries. The market for trendy fashionable clothes for women that are curvy is huge. The fashion industry is just discovering this huge market of regular sized women who have lots of cash to spend on clothes.
